"Back-log. Catch-up. Behind. All words most scrapbookers are familiar with, as they tend to be the gauge we use to see how we’re stacking up against others. “What’s your backlog?”
“Are you caught up?” How far behind are you?” This measurement is one we all do the math on; look at the amount of photos you have divided by the number of layouts you create in a week, month or year. It can be a daunting number; the equivalent of a buzz-kill to your creativity. It certainly doesn’t help when you’re a multi-photo scrapbooker in a single-photo layout world. And what if that one picture is an enlarged photo and you crop with the standard 4x6 photo. If you browse layout galleries or scrapbook magazines, you are bombarded with the one or two photo layouts.
Now, wait, this isn’t to say one-photo layouts are bad or unnecessary -- sometimes a gal needs just one photo to tell the story, even an oversized photo is a good thing. Single photo layouts also are great when you have a stellar photography. They can help emphasize the theme of a layout. And when there are tiny details in a photo, sometimes a 4x6 just doesn’t do them justice. However, knowing this doesn’t always help relieve the pressure we put on ourselves. Frankly most of us just don’t have the time to enlarge photos or to select just one “defining moment” photo from the small mountain we take at any given event. Not to mention there would
be a shortage of bookshelf space because scrapbookers would have hundreds of albums.
So . . . what’s a gal to do?
Find the inspiration in what you see to create layouts in your own style. The one-photo layout allows you to see great products – look at them to see how they’re used, where they’re placed and how they draw your eye. Use the space taken by the one enlarged photo and break it into equal sized smaller photos. If you have 25 pictures from your birthday party, don’t feel you need to weedle the number down – instead weed out the bad or missed shots and create that multi-photo layout. Do you have one outstanding photo from that event? Enlarge it and use it on one side of your layout and put the supporting photos on the other. Or create an entirely
separate layout using that photo but take the opportunity to talk about something other than the event the photo was from; create a personality page, a wish for you page, a year in review, thoughts or perspectives completely separate from the event itself. Even the journaling found on the layout may inspire you to write similarly.
When you look around, you’ll see that most scrapbookers are just like you; they’re creating multi-photo layouts on a regular basis. So, don’t let the inspiration to be found in the single photo layout pass you by. How will you be inspired?" -Feb Newsletter from Apron Strings Designs
This month I got to be the Sous Chef for the
Apron Strings Designs and wanted to share some of the layouts I did. The requirements for their designers are that each layout be a two pager so check out the rest of the work there!
